Hardwire TL-2 Metal Distortion pedal from Digitech

I just bought the TL-2 from Digitech and I am having a hard time finding the right settings for a good metal sound. Can someone direct me to a site for the settings or if some one uses this killer pedal what setting do you use. I'm using an Ibanez RG 560 and an Ibanez RBM Voyager both with 81 and 85 pick ups on a Line 6 amp if this helps.

been reading about it and it sounds quite good. . .street price is 200 bucks.

There aren't any in my area yet and in fact I have never played through any of the Tonelab series, but the amp models on VOX amps sound pretty great.

Anyone had any contact with any of these yet??

Does anyone own the THE STOMPBOX COOKBOOK?

The Stompbox Cookbook: Build Advanced Effects for Electric Guitar & Bass (Paperback)

I really want to get a copy and it is out of print apparently.

If anyone would be willing to either sell me their copy or perhaps lend it to me
for a month (I'll take exquisite care of it).

Any other recommendations for a good book on how to begin making stomp box
pedals. I want to use very simple analogue components.

I'm particularly interested in finding out how to interrupt audio, temporarily, without
making a popping noise.

pedalboard search

I can't remember where I saw it, but I'm looking for a pedalboard that you individually patch your pedals into (instead of a chain), the unit also has a few buttons to where you can run "patches" of your effects in different configurations.
I guess if I had to come up with a name for it, it would be called a 'signal chain selector'

Has anyone seen anything remotely clos to this, or possibly know someone who can build one?

Boss just raised the price of their PSA 120 power supply to $35.
That's just plain usurous.

I know that there are a lot of good alternatives out there. Which ones do you know about.

By googling I discovered the 1 Spot company which designed powersupplies that
only take up one space in a power strip. They are on sale on line for between
$20 adn $30 each.

What are some URLs for saving money but still getting good results.

9 volt battery purchases are just killing me lately..............lol!!!!

polyphony-->monophony bass emulation pedal?

i'm looking for a pedal that takes a polyphonic signal (a guitar), discerns the root note (the note a bass would play), and pitch shifts that root note down to fill in the bass frequencies when i'm playing solo and my bass player is too hung over to play.

does such a pedal exist?

Hi, everyone,

I just started a tribe dedicated to all that unusual things one can do with an acoustic or electric guitar,
from different techniques to different aesthetic approaches to physical adjuncts to the guitar
to innovators from the past and innovators in the future of this instrument.

probably not for the weeedala weeedala weeedala shred set, necessarily , if you know what I mean
though I don't ever want to be exclusive about creativity.

Hope you can make it and contribute some.

pedal help: zoom 505ii

heya guys

so years and years ago i got a zoom505ii guitar FX pedal. Now i got a loop pedal an i wanna run my voice through the old FX pedal. im trying to work out a way of having the pedal pluged in and being able to shift from using the fx into normal mode and back into an effect again... does that make sence?

So i make a loop with a normal vocal for example.
Then i add a loop with an effect onto it.
Then another loop with normal vocal.

As far as i can tell this has to be something i can do on the FX pedal, which i click to turn the FX off but NOT block it from the out put. Cant find anything online so i was wondering if anyone had this pedal and knew how to use the damn thing. (i was about 15 when i got it and would just crank up the distortion, pick an FX and make some noise so i never learnt how it worked really)

I bought a Digitech JamMan Looper a year ago and I have a ball with it. Good fidelity, etc. BUT, some of the design features are really stupid, like you have to unplug the USB cable after loading samples from a laptop before you can continue playing them. What is the most flexible looper out there now?

i play a fender stratocaster with seymour duncan pro2 pick-ups through a fender blues/deluxe, on the fender forum i've been hearing rave reviews about an overdrive pedal called the fulltone fulldrive II, it's going to be a while before i can get to the music store that has them to try one out, just wondering if any one has one or has tried one? any other suggestions for pedals for this guitar/amp combination? what i'm thinking now is a touch of boss compressor/sustainer, a fulldrive II, a nasty bigmuff like distortion for soloing and a bbe sonic stomp.

OT: saw the POLICE tonight in Oakland and wanted to gush and rant

Saw the Police tonight.......................Sting sang his ass off.
He sounds better than he did when I saw him in 79!
The subsonics were so loud at the Oakland Coliseum, however, that
much of his subtle reggae inflected bass lines were lost in a soup
of subsonics. Every big stadium show I"ve seen recently (Bjork being the worst)
have had just stupid amounts of subsonics in the mixing muddying up everything.
At a live show in San Jose (noone famous) I asked the mixer if he could please
turn down 60 hurts by about 10 db. He said, "why, I think it sounds good".
Am I nuts?????? When you can't hear the pitch of the bass guitar the subsonics
have been turned up too loud, imho.

Andy Summers played beautiful parts and some of the worst, disjointed
wanking guitar solos I"ve ever heard (and I'm a big fan of his work)

Stewart Copeland was on it and much more disciplined and keeping much better time than
in the past. This is off topic as hell but I felt like writing a quickie review.

Gig FX ....and A/B panning

has any tried out the Gig FX pedals the Chopper and the MegaWah?
i was looking up univibe type pedals and the good one's seem to range from $160 to $200 and then came across the Chopper which for $220 has a bunch of other modulation effects and a wah wah type foot pedal that changes parameters on the fly and it says it's true bypass which is essential for my signal chain. the sound clips sound great and the user reviews all sound stellar. and the Mega Wah sounded excellent too. i'm just curious if any one has tried them?

also i have been trying to find an a/b panning pedal with a rocking foot pedal that acts a a balance between two signals so that i could send one end into a chaotic fuzz box and the other into a tight distortion box and transition from one to the other with overlap inbetween insted of just an a/b/a+b foot switch box. the only thing i could really find that wasn't total crap was the one made by Ernie Ball and it is $160 and the reviews said it was poorly constructed and colored your tone a lot. does any one know of anything better?

I"m having a local music repairman custom build me a pedal that I designed
for my own idiosyncratic stomp box pedal.

When completed I'll call it the WALKER MANUAL GLITCH pedal
and what it does is very simple (and oriented towards after the recording
manipulation of a live loop):

It will have four momentary styled switches (like the kind used on a Gibson Echoplex)
that will be space equally apart but close enough so that you can either put
three fingers from one hand and one on another , or two fingers from each hand
on the four knobs.

Then there will be a simple toggle switch.

In the UP position, the pedal will pass all stereo audio only to be interrupted, when the four buttons are played manually
in the DOWN position, the pedal will ONLY pass stereo audio when the four buttons are played manually

In this way, one can selectively MUTE audio in rhythm ways or let audio pass through in rhythmic ways
or you can use the speed of the buttons to very, very rapidly 'glitch' out small parts of the passing audio.

It's designed to simulate, manually, the kinds of VST plugins that 'gate' , "slice and dice" or 'glitch' audio.

*************************
I love the idea of taking a long solo that is looped and then manually screwing with it and re-looping it.
Because the pedal is after the loop................all 'glitching' will be essentially non-destructive so you can
always retrigger the loop without glitching.

This may only appeal to me as a live looper and a drummer but I've always wanted such a thing to exist
and now, dammit, there will be one.

I'll give you the honest review of it when it is finished. It's it's really cool, I'll be able to have them custom made for
people. I'm sure it won't be super cheap because they'll be hand made but at least it will exist.

the WALKER MANUAL GLITCH pedal.

I'm s exci td th t it wi l fina ly b a real ty

hi, i'm new here. i am mostly interested in building my own stomp boxes, and have done a couple: a treble booster and an ab box.

does anyone have a schematic for an abc box? it would have three switches one could stomp to divert the signal to any of 3 possible outputs, a, b, or c. led indicators would be cool. thanks in advance.

(Fans of lots of fx pedals chained together might be interested in my drum machine setup)

Chaos Butterfly and Matt Davignon are bringing their unique forms of immersive improvised electroacoustic music up and down the West Coast. If you like this stuff, please come to one of the shows, enjoy the music and say hello!

Chaos Butterfly
The electroacoustic duo Chaos Butterfly is Jonathan Segel (violin, guitar, electronics) and Dina Emerson (voice, wineglasses, electronics, etc.). Chaos Butterfly has worked with Camper Van Beethoven (Segel) and the Meredith Monk Ensemble (Emerson), in addition to working with operas, orchestras, and the Cirque du Soleil. Their music encompasses song, soundtrack, storytelling, and mayhem, all created and performed in real time. The instrumentation is a seamless combination of electronic and acoustic sources, including violin, voice, laptop computers, guitar, wine glasses, and various toy samplers.

Matt Davignon is an experimental musician living in Oakland, California. Since 1993, he has developed his own unique style of music, which focuses largely on textures, arrhythmic patterns and musical imperfections. Since 2004, he has been working almost exclusively with a drum machine, run through a series of effects and samplers. Drawing from what he's learned in his previous work in sound collage, field recordings, found objects and prepared instruments, he creates an organic array of drones, gurgles and frantic passages.

WEIRD_DRUM_MACHINE tribe started

Hi all,

I"ve been fascinated by artists like Matt Davignon, Lx Rudis, Tony K and the members of the Drum Machine Museum who use a drum machine as their only source of sound so I started a brand new tribe called
the WEIRD DRUM MACHINE tribe.

It's a radical and weird usage of drum machines but as a person who has a large collection of vintage analogue drum machines and who was first turned on by my wife's innovative use of those machines using stomp box guitar pedals in her group Lackadaisy I have become fascinated by this
sound source that has, hitherto, been considered fairly uncreative in the pop world.

I also started a yahoo group called WEIRD_DRUM_MACHINE@yahoogroups.com so that we can upload examples of this arcane but fascinating use of drum machines.

Please come join us if it sounds fascinating and please keep programming your singersongwriter material with drum machines if you don't...................tee hee hee.

yours, Rick Walker

MOD FX blowout

I just got an advert from Musicians Friends and they are blowing out there remaining Alesis Mod FX for an astonishingly low price of $25 each!

If you don't know this series they are 24 bit digital pedals that can be used to synchronize with each other, rhythmically.

These are the only three left in their catalogue. I own the tremelo and it is particularly amazing because it has two sides to the pedal and you can run one tremelo effect through the other side.

Effectively, you can do things like run a 64th note square wave tremelo effect through an 8th note square wave tremelo effect..........it's really cool.
I'm buying the other two (the phaser and flanger)...............it's great for rhythmic effects used in live looping (my current love).

The cool thing is if you have the dough to pick one or all three of them up, you'll either be very happy or able to sell them at a profit on Ebay when they have disappeared (which should be rather quickly at these insanely low prices).

here's the skinny. don't say I didn't warn you:

Alesis Ampliton Tremolo and Autopan Unit
Low-frequency oscillator of both the tremolo and the autopan can be independently set. The LFO can be set to triangle, square, sample and hold,...

Our Price: $24.99
List Price: $129.00
Rating:
Qualifies for FREE SHIPPING!
Alesis FAZE Multi Phaser Effect Unit
You can choose the type of phaser from among deep mono, dual mono, contrary stereo, asynchronous stereo, and synchronized stereo. Beat tap button.

Our Price: $24.99
List Price: $129.00
Rating:
Qualifies for FREE SHIPPING!
Alesis PHLNGR Multi Flanger Effect Unit
All of its modulation waveforms can be beat-synchronized to the input music. Includes a Type switch that selects the type of flanging, a Beat Tap...

Ring Modulator

Anyone here have a favorite Ring Modulator ?
I'm talking analog stompbox, not software.
I'm thinking about getting another. I use to have a Colorsound and the DOD Gonkulator. The Gonkulator sucked, so I sold it. The Colorsound was traded a while back.

I plan on using it with analog synths and sound processing (tape loops, samples etc).
I'm thinking either the Moogerfooger or Electro Harmonix.
Anyone have experience with these or a recommendation on another brand ?

I'm new here and was wondering if anyone knows what effect U2's Edge uses for the lead break in "Discotheque". It's really broken and sounds a little like an insect.

In Praise of the Alesis Bit-R-Man

I love the Alesis Bit-R-Man with it's ability to distress and chop up and make lo-fi the sound.

For a while, Musicians Friend was blowing these expensive puppies out for 40 and 50 bucks. I kick myself for not buying two at the time, they were so cheap.

Michael Klobuchar just used two of them with two Alesis INEKO's in his set of looped guitar at the Zurich Live Looping FEstival that I just returned from performing at. He is getting really fucking wild guitar sounds out of it.

Great pedals. Anyone else using them? What are your favorite tricks if you are?

philosophical question

I have a friend who wants said that most music production
whether using 'hardware' or 'software' does the same thing.

the sound or signal goes into an A to D converter, is run through software (either proprietary as in the case of the giga delay or something equivalent or in a computer), then is converted from D to A
and goes out to the amplifier.

Given this case (and eliminating the discussion about purely analogue effects)

Then what , truly is the difference between a midi pedal like an
FCB 1010 controlling a digital effects device and someone stepping on a proprietary 'stomp box' pedal like my Boss OD 20 distortion unit.

My philosophical question is, isnt' a midi pedal a stomp box pedal?

Let the flames begin.......................lol!!!!!

i dunno if any of you have ever had one of these- but it has come to my attention that they have a small flaw that freezes them up- requiring them to be hard factory reset-it has something to do with being in tuning mode and using the outside pedal- so sometimes if you is like me- you get lucky and somebody brings one along and says- "i guess you can have it if you think you can fix it"- and poof- there we go- i should feel ashamed but when they brought this thing to me there was no way of me to know this problem was so simple- so if you ever see one being thrown out or neglected ask about it- look it up online for the hard reset- and there you friggin go

RANDOMIZING EFFECTS PEDAL?

I just made a post about the software Tu2 which uses a lot of randomization of different parameters in it.

I was thinking it would be so cool to have a footpedal that
would use things like cutoff, resonance, delay, modulation
so that you could randomize the speed and width of slices and what happens to them of whatever you run through the pedal.

It would be an awesome tool for live electronica or just cool guitar, bass, keyboard effects that are more current sounding.

I"m not a designer............would this be feasible.

I'd by the fucking thing..............does this interest anyone else?

Hey fellow noise-sculptors...

I need some new effects, not new in the box, new to me. Do any of you know of good stores in the Bay Area that sell used stompboxes and/or rack effects?

Or of any of you have anything you don't use, don't need, don't want, would trade for a bottle of whiskey, has a fucked connection and you don't feel like taking it apart and soldering it back...whatever, please let me know.

I'm lookin for a RAT distortion, a wah, maybe an autowah, phase shifters, pitch shifters, flangers, delays, tremelos, EQs, or anything interesting. Whatcha got, or where could I go browse and try shit out?

And if anyone knows a decent drummer that might be into an experimental excursion, please pass on the fact that we are looking.

Hey, folks. I have an EH Electric Mistress Deluxe (the rarer all green model, dated 1979) that isn't working... I can hear my guitar's signal when the effect is engaged and when it's not, but it's not flanging the signal anymore. There is a slight volume drop when the effect should be engaged, too. Any suggestions?

Hey, folks. I have an EH Electric Mistress Deluxe that seems to distort when the effect is engaged but not when the effect is off. It's all green and black with the knobs on the right side.... Is this a vintage pedal? If so, can i find replacements parts without tainting it's "vintage" status? Any recommendations as to what needs to be done are greatly appreciated.

DISTORTION PEDAL recommendations?

I went down and tested the Line 6 Distortion modeler pedal
at my local music store and was incredibly underwhelmed.

I have several distortion, over drive and fuzz pedals but I wonderd if anyone would recommend there favorites.

I also would love to know if anyone has a multi-effects pedal that has a pretty good collection of distortions, fuzzes and overdrives in it (even better if they have lo fi, bit reduction, granular synthesis or any other 'fuck it up' effects.

So far if I had to go to a desert island and could only take one distortion pedal I"d have to go with the original
PRO CO Rat.

Digitech GNX3 Rocks!!!

I've been using this fx processor for about three months now, and I have to say that it's my best friend. Sure, I find a lot of friendship in human dimensions as well. But in terms of really honing and crafting a sound, your friends won't be able to help you like the GNX will.

There's that boomarang mode in which you can loop and sample live and build on that, there are vast recording possibilities as well. You can do your whole demo using it! It syncs up to the computer, of course, so you can use software to interface with the different amp and cabinet presets or even create your own amp sounds and just really get a LOT of custom sounds built in to toggle between with great ease. I love it. You probably will too.

WHat else works? I'm also on the look out for pedals that get just absolutely crazy and spatial results. Know any tricks?

my chinese compessor died, and im wondering why. none of my boss gear had a problem handling the extra milliamps...
btw,we run on 220 V here,

reverb/delay pedal (which I love) sound COMPLETLEY different when i use the drive channel on my fender amp??. way different. previously i had put a boss MT-2 before it, and it was cool. but now its all digital and overprocessed sounding. ah... what to do... I just wanted a warmer distortion. ... Im guessing the RV-3 likes to drive a clear preamp, but why?
I bet an FX loop would solve this, but I dont have one, dammit!
ok .Im getting the chinese OD pedal and going into the clean side..
here i go again, searching for the "perfect sound' , ha ha ha...

Yeah onguitar... its not a super-overdrive, but an overdrive that reminds me of the old DOD , but maybe even rattier sounding.
used with the mt-2 it makes it have a good crappy hi-hend thing sound, . crispier and dirty; and over the top..eh I dont believe in dist+dist but...
tube screamer gots more balls as i recall, but we slam those into fx loop for best effect' right?. I can go to the drive channel and its not too much dist -on-dist mush. I dig it for 25 bucks US here in china.(more.....)
I aint comin back after this election.

oh if you cant figure out how or what do do stompbox/creatively, ask brian eno.
http://sphex.tentacle.net/oblique_strategies/

I use this to compose actually.
when this forun gonna POP!!! man? doesnt anyone else lose sleep over this crazy stompbox thing? i could care less about the new multi effectors really, what about getting psychotic with the old or cheap n obscure ???.its more fun!!!

None of this would have been possible without the existence of Loopers Delight, founded and maintained by Kim Flint. He just told us that this incredibly informative and exciting website has over 900,000 page views per month now. Thanks Kim for all of your energy, time and financial contribution to this community.
See you all there, I hope!!!!

yours, Rick Walker (festival organizer)

ps Sadly, Concert headliner, Italy's Roberto Zorzi's has had to cancel his tour to the US because of the illness of his partner Paola. Our heart is with them both and we pray for her speedy recovery.

puportedly all in one distortoin pedal?

I was really dissapointed with the Line 6 distortion modeller
and I'm sure that there isn't on pedal that does it all, but it would be really great if this thing was cool for just
mangling my voice occasionally.

Im collecting m-zone settings to try.
in the states I a lot of vintage tube amps, so its hard to get a satisfying tone here. oh im playng a strat.

If You Could Design a Stomp Box Pedal (that doesn't exist) What Would It Do

I think someone should make a stomp box pedal that
does granular synthesis.

There are a plethora of granular synthesis plugins for the computer environment, don't you think that the ability to
fuck up sound live with a pedal with one or two expression pedals to control different parameters of granular synthesis?

While we're at it, how about a slicer/stutterer pedal
for fragmenting one's sound in rhythmic ways.

Imagine a pedal that would allow you to slice up the sound at any speed with controllable noise gates that could either have
hard square wave functions of ADSR styled roll offs controllable with expression pedals.

I'll buy each of those, thank you!!!!

I wasn't originally planning on it due to my laptop being broken, so this is going to be interesting. I've been given approval to just let it rip and not worry too much about getting nasty, harsh, and distorted (no ambient chill tonight).

Also I created two Tribes by mistake and they are both the same pretty much. Anyone know how to delete a Tribe?

Electro-Harmonix 16 sec delay reissue

I couldn't help myself and I ordered one of these badboys. I guess they're part of a limited run. Has anyone actually laid a hand on one of these yet? Although musictoyz.com said mine shipped, there is little information about this box on Electro-harmonix's site. I guess I'm just being over anxious, but for fans of the Line6 DL-4 and the Boss Gigadelay this thing should be sweet. 4 minutes of looping time and it puts out MIDI clock so you can sync your drum machine to it. I'm hoping to run it along side a Boss Gigadelay so I can get asynchronous loops. I have a crude pedal that will let me a/b two sources. Is there something better that I may use?

Check this amazing shit out!!!!!

http://www.angelfire.com/yt3/redtele/

ps I'm also, so in love with the Alesis pedals that they are STILL blowing out at www.musiciansfriends.com.

$35 for the tremelo pedal that not only has tempo synced tremelo effects but also has a stereo panner included. If one uses square wave tremelo on the right side of the pedal in sync mode and then sync it to the left side of the pedal using square wave mode in auto panning but only in mono then you can have really quickly sliced and diced, tempo synced tremelo that is then 'tremeloed' at a slower speed.

This pedal is just amazing.........full stereo............double effects...............tempo synced and digital passed on if you have other effects.

$35? The best deal in the world.

The filter, vocoder, phaser, flanger, tremelo (auto pan), compressor and bit reducer (distortion) are still selling this cheap.

If you have any extra money.............do it and you'll thank me for the advice.

Vox Tonelab SE

In an effort to loose my rack when doing informal jams I bought a Vox Tonelab SE recently. Man, for $500 this thing rules. Many of the stomp box models are decent or great, and as far as tube sound and *feel* I think this device blows away the Line6 Podxt. I haven't compared it to a regular Pod or Pod pro though.

One really nice thing about it is that it's delays behave just like an old analog delay pedal or the Digitech PDS-8000. By this I mean when you change delay time, you don't get an ugly "zipper" tone (which can be nice, I use a Gigadelay for this) but you get great pitch warping maddness. Mmmm. Reminds me of when I duct taped an analog Ibanez delay pedal to my guitar for the first time so I could tweak and play at the same time. SWEET. Now I don't have to use duct tape, as I can assign the delay time perimeter to one of the built in expression pedals. So, all you fans of the looper in the Line6 DL-4, check out the 8 sec looper in this. It's so sweet.

One bad note about the Vox: It's got some EQ issues. By this I mean it's output frequency range is way off for an electric guitar. When in "line" out mode (which I use) it's putting out a lot of tone in the frequency range between 6khz and 20khz when you're using high gain amp models. Guitar cabs don't put much out at all in this range (most 12" speaker specs end at 5Khz), so to make the tonelab sound good I had to use a graphic EQ to kill everything above 6 khz. The result is great, and worth it for all the great things this box does, but figure in the price of an EQ if you're thinking about buying this box. Hopefully Vox will correct this in a future software revision. We'll see.

effects chains

i've spent many a weary northwest winter afternoons tweaking my effects chain to make them more interactive with each other, and i've come up with a bit of a secret weapon, now to be not-so-secret....
guitar>volume pedal>crusty old distortion>envelope filter>delay

i feel funny mentioning this, but it's such an incredible tone, i just gotta share it. the volume pedal allows you to 'ride' the envelope filter till it totally closes, while the distortion gives it a Moog sound, and the delay (which you can also control with the volume pedal) throws you into some kinda sci-fi flick. give it a shot, you won't be dissapointed. it's also a great setup with an eBow.

i guess i'm prying for, and hoping to trade, inside little secrets on chains that make a guitar sound like a not-guitar, because i have lots of fun with that. ideas? inspirations?

-vernie.
p.s. great tribe idea, my friend...

Has anyone tried this? I got to play with my friends at burningman for about an hour and the sounds were insane! He had a microphone attached as well.

Last Xmas (whatever you call that holiday/excuse for buying/making/giving things to/for other people) I got my lady the mighty Line6 Delay Modeler. Not cheap, but it seems like a pretty seriously bad ass machine. My lady loves this tool. Who else swears by this beast? I was thinking I may have to get one for myself, but so far, I'm still dealing with the sickness of The Evolver as an external processing device....soon enough, though.

Welcome to STOMPBOX PEDALS

Even though I started life off as a drummer, I have always loved stomp box pedals. I've always loved to mangle sounds, whether it be drums, voice, bass guitar, prepared guitar or, hell, anything.

For someone who can hardly even play a proper chord on a guitar, I have collected them; lusted after them; perused hundreds of catalogues; gawked at dozens of floor pedal
setups of performing musicians (damn, have you ever seen the LA band, WOVEN's floor pedal set up? DAMN!!) and spent more money than I care to admit, buying them used (and even, occasionally, new).

Tonight, I was wishing I had a tribe to go to, to ask a question about distortion pedal recommendations and I couldn't find one, so I thought I'd start this tribe and see if there are other hopeless stompbox pedal addicts out there.

Welcome! I think I'll start the first thread since it's what I came here for.
